Traditional Chinese Medicine and Skin Conditions: Can It Help?

Many people these days suffer from skin conditions, and these can be uncomfortable, embarrassing, and debilitating, in some cases. From acne and eczema to psoriasis and rosacea, there are all sorts of conditions that can affect your skin. While there are topical treatments and oral medications that can be prescribed to help, many people these days also turn to holistic therapies, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) including acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.

So, can TCM help with skin conditions such as those mentioned above? Well, many people have found it is an effective, non-invasive, holistic solution to helping to ease and manage conditions like these. While it is often associated with easing pain or reducing stress, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine have helped many people who suffer from skin problems.

In this article, we will look at some of the common skin conditions that acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine may be able to help with.

Some Common Skin Conditions

There are a number of common skin conditions for which people seek relief through acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. Some of these are:

Acne

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions, affecting both teenagers and adults. In TCM, acne is often associated with internal heat, dampness, or stagnation in the body. TCM focuses on restoring inner balance rather than simply treating the surface symptoms. Both acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine help regulate hormonal activity,  improve blood flow, and calm inflammation – leading to fewer breakouts, less redness, and clearer skin over time. Many patients also find that such treatments help reduce stress, which is a common trigger for acne, thereby supporting both skin and overall well-being.

Eczema

Eczema is a chronic condition that causes itchy, dry, and inflamed patches of skin. While moisturisers and topical creams can provide temporary relief, they usually don’t treat the deeper cause. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, alongside lifestyle and dietary advice, may help by strengthening the immune system, reducing overactive inflammatory responses, and calming the nervous system. This holistic approach can lead to fewer and milder flare-ups over time.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition that causes skin cells to grow too quickly. This leads to thick, scaly patches on the skin. Flare-ups can be influenced by stress, diet, and environment factors. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine for psoriasis tend to focus on reducing systemic inflammation, improving circulation, and supporting healthy liver function, as the liver plays a key role in detoxification, according to TCM. While this is not a cure, regular sessions might help to reduce itching, redness, and scaling, and improve overall skin comfort.

Rosacea

Rosacea appears as persistent facial redness, visible blood vessels, and sometimes acne-like bumps. It can be triggered or  aggravated by stress, sun exposure, alcohol, or spicy foods. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine for rosacea can help the condition by improving blood flow to the skin, balancing the body’s internal heat, and calming overactive immune responses. Many people notice that with regular treatment, their redness becomes less obvious, and flare-ups become easier to control.

Hives

Hives are itchy, raised welts that can appear suddenly and fade within hours or days. They are often caused by allergies, stress, and other triggers. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine aim to calm the overactive immune system, reduce histamine release, and improve the body’s resilience to stress. Many practitioners also offer dietary guidance to help identify and minimise potential triggers.

These are some of the common skin conditions that people seek holistic therapy for. Of course, it is important to seek advice from your doctor if you suffer from these or other skin conditions.
